TYPE DESIGN CULTURE TODAY
An artist talk hosted by the University of Central Arkansas featuring designer and artist Susan Kare. Kare is known for her pixel icon designs for Apple in the 80s.

THE POSTER
The concept was inspired by the grid systems used in design. Kare is famous for her pixel art, which also follows a grid. Bold blue and pink stand out against a black background (a nod to the 80s), and the pink areas were used to add dimensionality to the pixel-based "TYPE". Creating a 3-D effect allowed the text to enter an area beyond the grid.

THE ARTICLE
PIXEL ART and SUSAN KARE are displayed in Geneva, a typeface designed by none other than Kare herself!
The text covers the biography of Susan Kare. The design is consistent with the the poster. The text on the left page borders the pink "pixel" areas, while the right text hovers over the "pixels", creating different planes on the surface of the pages. Kare's portrait is rendered in small white pixels. The viewer is guided from left to right through the movement created by the pink "pixels". As well, Kare's portrait faces the right page, guiding the reader to the next section of text.
